  1. Figurative Language Definition: Language that is interpreted imaginatively rather than literally. Ex. Metaphor & Simile

  2. Metaphor Definition: A figure of speech in which one thing is compared with another, sometimes in an unusual way. Ex: I am a bear in the morning.

  3. Alliteration • Definition: • Repetition of an initial consonant sound across syllables. • Ex: Sleds slid on snowy slopes.

  4. Imagery • Definition • Words and phrases that create vivid sensory experiences for the reader. • Key Point** Appeals to the five senses • Sight • Hearing • Touch • Taste • Smell • Ex: The giant tree was ablaze with the orange, red, and yellow leaves that rustled gently in the cool breeze.

  5. Simile • Definition: • A figure of speech that uses like, as, or as if to directly compare two different things. • Ex: He sat as still as a stone statue.

  6. Consonance • Definition: • The repetition of a consonant sound. • Key point** This is throughout the word. • Ex: Mack attacked his Cracker Jacks.
