Applied Physics Physics? STEM: Week of Discovery Prof. Robert Jorstad
This is B.S. … in Physics • 60% of Physics Bachelor’s go to grad school • Here’s what happens to the other 40%...
Who Hires? • A few of companies who hired at least 3 Physics BS between 2009 & 2011 • HP, Intel, Google, Microsoft • Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, Boeing • Various National Labs • US DOD, DOE, Army, Air Force, Patent & Trademark Office Source: AIP Statistics website
For Master’s? These are up$10k/yr These are unchanged
PhDs? Up$40k from BS, hard to get These are 2 or 3 yr positions Note: Schools typically pay your tuition & fees in addition to ≈$2k/mo stipend to go to physics grad school.
Some Insane Physics PhD Stats • In 2012: 51,000 PhDs granted in all majors • In 2012: Only 1800 in Physics • 20% Female (all time high) • 50% are from some other country • Avg time in grad school = 6.3 yrs • When asked: “Would you do it again?” About 80% responding said yes! The rest were too jaded to bother responding.
My opinion • Physics is outstanding for undergrad • Highly respected degree • Plan electives wisely, easy to shift into engineering or comp sci for grad school • Interesting! How and why the world works… • Master’s is the new Bachelor’s • Set yourself apart • Get more earnings lifetime • PhD…are you crazy? • Expect several postdocs, lots of moving • Might make less lifetime than Master’s • 50% leave the field to get a job anyways… • Do Engineering or Comp Sci PhD instead!
Physics at AHC? • PHYS 110 or appeal through Dept Chair • PHYS 161-163 for engineers or certain pre-meds (UCLA, UCSD, etc) • Plan your possible transfer schools now • Check Assist.org and make a plan • Actually study and pass your classes on the 1st try • PHYS 141-142 pre-meds, architects, etc • PHYS 100 or ASTR 100, our GE courses • PHYS 121-124 Project & Design Lab Friday Night Science!!!
PHYS 121-124: Proj. & Design • Student & instructor find project 1st day of lab • Student prepares equipment list, builds prototype, troubleshoots, re-designs, etc • Student presents at local K-12 schools and at FNS event • Requires multiple outreach per semester per student
Parting Thoughts • Think about your future job options now • Science jobs pay a lot less than engineering • Engineering (and physics) are not memorization disciplines • Do some programming • Biophysics? Medical Physics? Wall Street? • http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes192012.htm
