LMS Selection Project Notes on CUCCIO Open Systems Questions (Andrea) 2 June 2010
Who responded? • Western: Issue RFI this fall, consider Blackboards's NG of WebCT, also open source. • UVic: Moodlesince 2007, from Blackboard (WebCT, since 4.1).Small pocket of Sakai on campus. • Queen’s:Moving to Moodle, from WebCT 4.1. Used 1 year in 2 pilots, 10+ courses, 1000’s of students. • Windsor: Sakai 2.5 since 2006, to 2.7 in Fall 2010; moved from homegrown Notes app. • Virginia Tech:Sakai for about 1-2 years for collaband project groups. Sole LMS in Fall 2010.
Why? • Typical and common reasons: Cost (though not always seen as lower in end), not hand-cuffed, philosophy, community of support, etc. • Also, Virginia Tech and Uvic burned by bad Blackboard support in upgrades (as with McMaster)
Migration experiences (Not unique to Open System move, of course.) • Drain on resources • Differences in structure, data format, modules • Most data types cannot be automatically converted. E.g., quizzes, discussion forums must all be recreated • Used existing staff, some student hires, but varied a lot. Generally, need lots of help!
System support and development • Using own staff • Not much development happening
