  2. LMS Selection Project Big Picture • Select new LMS • Determine timeframe for migration. • Two phases: • Evaluation of options, and recommendation of a (very) short list. • Pilot/evaluation of short list with faculty and student input, for final selection.

  3. Project progress since September • Team (ITMS, CTE, DCE, OPD, Lib, faculty members, STAC for students) • 6 fall team meetings, 1 meeting 2010 • Charter • Investigating options • 3 fall subgroup meetings: Determining criteria • Using workflow scenarios, not just feature lists • RFP – start on document • Sandboxes for “known 4”

  4. Some Criteria • Course Administration, Assessments, Teams, Online Discussions, Gradebook, Assignments, Course content, Communications and Collaborations, System Administration, Infrastructure Integration, Accessibility, Standards compliance, Adaptability/ Programmability/ Automation, …

Timing • Plan to upgrade to V7.4 in April, supported until 2012 • Future V8.x (transition release), support to 2014 • Current scenario: • Upgrade to V7.4 in April 2010 • Run V7.4 until 2012 • Pilot next LMS in late in 2010 • Run next LMS in parallel in 2011-2012 for migration (volunteers, encouraged, forced) • Other factors (like ANGEL support) may alter timing

Review of LMS options • Choose another commercial LMS • Two biggest are Blackboard and Desire2Learn • Others include: eCollege, Atutor, SharePoint, … • Choose an open LMS • Two biggest are Moodle and Sakai • Others include: ELGG, LON-CAPA, … • Go Web 2.0 – Use FB, Wiki, Blog, Twitter, ... • Not practical on own, but want to incorporate

  7. “Open” – what does it mean? • Open source • Access to the end product source code • Generally royalty-free • Generally has a large community of peer support • Moodle and Sakai are free, but need to assess whether additional local or purchased support required • Can purchase support and also hosting from 3rd party vendors (Unicon, rSmart, Longsight)

Next steps • Student input – STAC, other student assistance • Create RFP (Request For Proposals) • Ask vendors how they support important scenarios and critical features • Initial testing on product sandboxes • Hold campus info sessions • Open forums • Perhaps survey • Other info dissemination and feedback forums • Leads to … Recommendation to UCIST, and pilot

Some questions in the project • What are the important things our LMS should do? • Teams heavily used, combined courses, instructional resources repository, etc. • Open/community source differences? • Consider “hosted” service? Pros and cons • Expectations of campus input into selection? • To avoid “personal preference” feedback, expect to involve campus in the very short list
