  5. The Privatization Of Knowledge : Who Owns What We Learn?

  6. Over the past few decades a trend has emerged of knowledge, information and technique being removed from the public sphere to behind the walls of patent law, or kept unpublished and private. Much research undertaken now is paid for by private enterprise, and from the results decisions are made which affect the quality of life of our nation(s).

  7. Since knowledge is doubling each year or so (depending on the field chosen), and much new knowledge is retained in private hands, what is the impact on us, in a public school, fulfilling the basic educational endeavour of western society? What do we lack, and how can we find out?

  8. How do we prepare ourselves and our students for full participation in our knowledge-driven world?

  9. What Does “Democracy” Mean Under These Changing Conditions?

  10. This is a call for abstracts to be submitted to Aller-Stead by Noon on January 9, 2004. An abstract outline is available on the TEL MPC StaffShare. Abstracts will be published prior to the Institute, and available on-line. Submit abstracts to monarchmatters@hotmail.com. Readers of this slideshow who are not members of the MPC staff are invited to take part in this forum through e-submissions, or by attendance at the Institute’s Forum.

  11. These abstracts will be expanded upon in a public Forum, open to all staff, community members and students, at noon on Wednesday March 10th., 2004, in the Large Group Room at Monarch Park Collegiate.
