Where Does My Water Come From? • Water runs downhill • Interactions of minerals and chemicals alter the quality of stream water. • The flow of water is dependent on gravity. • Streams and manmade basins direct the water • How will human actions affect the watershed?
Watershed Watershed-drainage basin, is the area of land that is drained by a water system. Tributary- a stream that flows into a lake or larger stream Channel- The path a stream follows Divide- separates watersheds by elevation
River Systems Gradient- the measure of the change in elevation over a certain distance Discharge- the amount of water that a stream or river carries in a given time http://geoweb.tamu.edu/courses/geol101/grossman/Stream.profile.jpg
Load • Bed Load- large materials like pebbles and boulders along the stream bed http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/796/5103379.JPG 2. Suspended Load- small rocks and soil carried in suspension http://www.indiana.edu/~g103/G103/week6/load.jpg 3. Dissolved load- material carried in solution http://piru.alexandria.ucsb.edu/collections/geography3b/alphan/dissolved-suspended.jpg
A Watershed Model It is your turn to create a model of a watershed. Using the objects provided in class or brought from home you will place the objects in an area specified by your teacher. • As we work on making our model record your observations in your science journal. • What do you predict will happen? • How will human actions affect the area. • How does this relate to the Earth at large?
