  2. Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To him who overcomes . . . I will give a white stone with a new name written on it . . . Rev. 2:17 NLT

  4. John 1:35-42 A New Name

  5. In the Old Testament a change of name signified a new relationship with God and a pledge of divine action to change the status or character of a person.

  6. Notice they did not just stay with Jesus for one day, but from that point forward.

  7. Jesus taught only one kind of Christian, a disciple, one who is in the process of his new name being written all over his life.

  8. Sometimes we have our new name written in only part of our lives.

  9. Road Blocks

  10. God writes His new name only on those places in our lives where He has erased our pride, self sufficiency and self interest.

  11. Pride is the sin of making self God

  12. Self sufficiency is the sin of having to be in control

  13. Self interest is the sin of selfishness

  14. Road blocks prevent following

  15. To follow Jesus is to make God the center of my life by laying down my right to decide and control my life.

  16. Removing road blocks

  17. Knowing, understanding and embracing the teachings of Jesus. Reading, studying, pondering and obeying

  18. Practicing the spiritual disciplines which create room for God to write His name in our lives. Solitude, silence, fasting, prayer, the word

  19. Doing life with others. Worship, prayer, serving and sharing

  20. future home—Ezekiel 48:35

  21. The Lord is There
