  3. Seed • absorbs water • Opens up • A shoot (plumule) emerges • The cycle continues

  4. Roots • Absorb water from soil • Anchors plant into soil • Store extra food

  5. Leaf • Provide plants with all their food • They turn sunlight into food energy through photosynthesis • Leaves also make the oxygen in the air that we breathe

  6. Stem • The stem supports the upper parts of plants and may have branches, leaves, flowers and fruits • The stem is generally green when young and later often becomes woody and dark brown • Water and dissolved nutrients from the soil travel up the stem in a system of tubes • Food from the leaves travel down the stem to the roots • Stems also store food for the plant

  7. Flower • Flowers are generally the showiest part of a plant and is the reproductive part • Their beauty and fragrance attract pollinators (insects or birds) which help with pollination • After pollination, the petals fall off and the seeds develop in the part of the flower called the ovary

  8. Fruit • Provides covering for seed 4 Stages of fruit • Pollination • Form small fruit • Fruit expands • Fruit is ripe
