Roots • The root has the following jobs: • 1. to grip tightly to the soil so the plant stays in place • 2. to absorb the water and mineral nutrients from the soil • 3. to store food • 4. in some non-flowering plants, it is part of reproduction
Roots • There are two main types of roots • Tap roots • Fibrous roots • http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/root/rootfac.html
Stem • A plant’s stem has two basic functions: they support the leaves and they carry water and food from place to place inside the plant. • A tree’s trunk is a type of stem.
Leaf • The leaf’s main job is to make food for the plant during photosynthesis. • A leaf uses carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, and sunlight to produce glucose, a type of sugar. This is called the “product”. • A by-product is oxygen and a little bit of water that leaves the leaf during transpiration.
Flower, Fruit, and Seeds • The flower is where the reproduction of some plants happens (many plants do not use flowers to reproduce). • Once the flower is pollinated, it forms a fruit. A fruit is where the seeds are kept. Many times fruit helps in the spread of seeds. • The seed is the immature plant.
