MODIS Data Available through SeaWiFS/SIMBIOSan Ocean Discipline Prototype for VIIRS
NPP Prototyping Activities • Using MODIS data to develop prototype for NPP/VIIRS ocean data processing, distribution, and community support • design based on ‘lessons learned’, capitalize on what already exists, strive for flexibility • Infrastructure Development • interfaces, data flow and volume, ancillary data requirements, processing capacity • Processing Capability • flexible software design to facilitate algorithm implementation, modification, and verification
MODIS Data Available • Level-1A (MOD01SS) ocean subsetted L1A from GSFC DAAC. • Geolocation, (MOD03) generated from definitive attitude and orbit using UW IMAPP (slightly modified) • Level-1B (MOD02) generated with standard MCST code and LUTs • Level-2, generated using SeaWiFS/SIMBIOS MSL12 code and current RSMAS vicarious calibration
Level-2 Product Suite • Normalized radiances in 6 bands • OC3M Chlorophyll (chlor_a2) • SST (11um, standard MODIS nlsst algorithm and coefficients • K490, AOT(869), Ångstrom • Typical files size for 5-minute granual is 10-20 MB, compressed. • Other products can be generated with MSL12 (flexibility)
Data Distribution • Direct download from the SeaWiFS browser http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/ • Single file point-and-click download and bulk order staging for ftp pull • Rolling archive of most recent MODIS data on anonymous ftp site • Near real-time image support 22 cruises since support for MODIS data added on July 9. 70% of those asked for MODIS data in addition to SeaWiFS.
Rolling Archive • Anonymous ftp site ftp://oceans.gsfc.nasa.gov/ • Most recent 10 days of MODIS/Aqua and MODIS/Terra • Level-1A, Level-1B, Level-2, and Geolocation available
Summary • A prototype data processing and distribution system for NPP/VIIRS is being developed using MODIS data. • Data production is now operational, and the products are freely available. • Methods of data distribution are in place, and enhancements continue. • We encourage you to evaluate the system and products, and we welcome your feedback.
