  1. TITLE: Tools of Archaelolgy! Quick Write 30 seconds! Make a list of 5 things you know about Early Humans (WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR NOTES)

  2. Do Now • Think about how your lives today are similar to and different from those of prehistoric people. • How did early humans interact with the environment?

  3. Archaeologist • Find the definition of an archaeologist in your textbooks • Hint- its not in the glossary • So it must be in chapter 1 somewhere

  4. Hominid Development: • Australopithecine- first human like creature to walk upright • Homo habilis- first to make stone tools • Homo erectus – first to move out of Africa • Homo sapiens- physically modern humans (us!)

  5. Activity: analyze the time line • Make a timeline of your hominid like the one in the book • Research about your particular hominid in your book • You will present your findings to the class • You have 20 minutes to work on this assignment

  6. The Stone Age • Use of tools • Control of fire • Development of language • Farming- the raising of crops and animals

  11. Test Review • I’m going to pass out copies of the Early Humans test we took in _August/September______We will spend a few minutes going over the questions and the correct answers • IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS or are CONFUSED ABOUT ANYTHING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

Don’t Forget… • After the Neanderthal were: • Homo Sapiens (Cro-Magnon) • Cro-Magnon refers to one of the main types of early modern humans whose remains were first • Why do you need to remember this? • In case they use the word Cro-Magnon instead of Homo Sapiens, you should still know what they are talking about! 

Whiteboard Rapid Fire • You will each receive a whiteboard • When a question pops up, you will have 15 seconds to respond to the question • When I say “GO” EVERYONE must hold up their whiteboards (even if you didn’t know the answer, I want you to write down your best guess)! • Ready, Set, Let’s Go…

Study Guide • You will be receiving two large index cards this week. • The first one will be your study guide for Early Humans • You will receive the second one on Thursday for Mesopotamia • Please copy down the notes on the index card to use as an additional study tool on top of your notes 

Study Guide (use the front and back of your index card) • Hunter-gatherers had to adapt to many changes • Once they were able to adapt to their environment, they could establish permanent communities • When they couldn’t acquire goods they could not produce, they had a surplus of goods that they could trade • Homo-erectus was the first species to venture into different climates of Europe. Adjusting to the cold weather was difficult because they had to locate food during the winter seasons

Study Guide (use the front and back of your index card) • Domestication of grains (plants) and animals resulted in permanent agricultural settlements • Hunter-gatherers experimented with agriculture 12,000 years ago because the earth’s climate warmed and more plants began to grow- Ice Age ended!
