Reading • Phonemic Awareness • Shared, choral, echo, and interactive reading (Large groups) • Independent reading (class/school library books) • Guided Reading * Individual and small group teaching * Teacher directed * Meets individual needs with leveled text and/or appropriate activities * Focuses on emergent reading strategies and comprehension Curriculum

What Can I Do to Help Prepare My Child? (More Info to come during conferences!) • Read to your child. • Sing silly rhyme songs with them. • Have them practice writing their name (Proper Form!!) • Practice “Life Skills”: tying shoes, hygiene, student ID # and password. • Let them tell you “stories”. • Practice counting things at home. • Practice saying & recognizing the alphabet. • Talk with your child.

BIRTHDAYS ANOTHER GREAT OPTION: You may purchase one of your child’s favorite books and donate it to the library in their honor. Please contact Mrs. Honaker for more information. • Pre-wrapped snacks only(Rice Krispie Treats, Little Debbie Snacks etc. and birthday napkins are welcomed.) • No drinks or party bags • Celebrations will be held at the end of the day around 2:40. • Invitations will be handed out by me as long as every student in the class is invited.
Important Dates to Remember! • Parent/Teacher Conferences October 11th 10:00-6:00 Watch for a sign up sheet in your child’s folder a few weeks before if you don’t sign up tonight!!
Boosterthon 2010! • Pledges in $1.00, $2.00, $3.00 + for each lap • Money due after the Fun Run! • Free T-shirt • Prizes! • PTA uses funds for various projects. • 10% goes to me!!!
Unfinished Work Policy • Morning work • Typically, will not be ‘unfinished work’ • Finish at home if you would like. • Lets me know skills that the student is still developing or mastered • Class work not completed in ample time, usually due to working slowly, excessive talking to neighbors, unfocused, will be saved in colored boxes on table to be completed during free center time • Miss out on Fun Friday if not completed.
Water Bottles!!! • Water fountain in room • Bottle waters may be brought in, however please make sure they are SPORTS TOP! • Taken home each day!
Treasure Chest- Group Incentives! • In our class, we earn gold coins! • Compliments • Working together • Everyone following rules • 25 gold coins earn: • PJ day • Extra recess • Game day • No shoes for an afternoon • Popsicle party • Extra free center time
Choices Chart!!! • Everyone starts on Green! (Great day!) • Yellow= Warning (Asked once with continued behavior) • Blue= Speak with teacher (Behavior continues) • Pink= Reserved for major offences (principal’s office) • In the daily folders, I will make a check for each color change and write the offense. Snack Time!!! • Healthy Choices!!! • Cheese crackers • Pretzels • Goldfish • Cheese Its • Popcorn • 100 calorie packs • Pringle snack packs • Granola bars (w/out nuts) • Dry cereal • Please no: • Peanut butter crackers or peanut butter granola bars • Any type of nuts or trail mix with nuts • Drinks (other than water bottle) • Things that need to stay cold (1:05) • Items that need to be peeled • Items that require a spoon (fruit cups)
Star of the Week!!! • Most weeks, a student will be chosen to become the Star of the Week! • Each day of the week, the student will have a special activity to do • Example: Monday- Present poster about themselves. Tuesday- Teacher will read special book from home. Wednesday- Special interview. Etc.. (TBD)
Buying snacks at lunch • Students are more than welcome to buy snacks (chips/ice cream/ popsicles) at lunch as long as there are no restrictions on account! • Please buy them before the line goes down! • Café workers are busy with first grade lunch!
New Reading Adoption! This year FISD adopted a new reading program. The program is GREAT, but we are still getting our feet wet! One good part of the adoption is the ability for parents/students to access books online from home! More information is to come about how you can help your child read these books on their level!
