Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities A National program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Primary goal is to implement healthy eating and active living policy- and environmental-change initiatives that can support healthier communities for children and families Special emphasis is placed on reaching children who are at highest risk for obesity on the basis of race/ethnicity, income and/or geographic location 4 year grant
Goals of the Grant • Goal 1: Reduce obesity and increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables through the development of community/school gardens and orchards in Lake Worth, FL • In the works • Scottish Rite Masonic Center (In the ground!) • Highland Elementary • South Grade Elementary
Vision for the Gardens Create a sense of place Destinations Play spaces Orchard Vegetables Herbs Butterfly gardens
Goals for the Grant • Goal 2: Increase use of Joint/Mutual Use Agreements to expand service hours and access to the community's recreation facilities.
Goals for the Grant • Goal 3: Develop and expand partnerships to focus on vending machine policy. • Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation • City of Lake Worth
Goals for the Grant • Goal 4: Increase opportunities for physical activity at parks in Lake Worth, Palm Springs, Greenacres. • Spillway Park, Lake Worth
Goals for the Grant • Goal 5: Improve children's ability to walk/bike to school through safe routes to school partnerships
Long Term Sustainability • Community owners of the gardens • Sponsorship of plots • Partnerships with complementary organizations • Plans for financial viability • Adoption of policy
