Materialist Monism • Early Greek philosophy • Democritis – original theory of atomism • Leucippus • Connected to Biological Naturalism • The physical universe is all that exists • There is little to no evidence for any type of spiritual beings or existence after death • No one has come back from death to verify an afterlife

  4. Materialist Monism • Problems • Early humans buried their dead with hopes of an afterlife • Disregards many of the world’s faiths which believe in an afterlife

  5. Dualism • Connected to Platonic Views • Body is the house or vessel for the soul which escapes at death • Plato’s argument • The mind can contemplate things independent of the body • Thus, the mind can exist independent of the body

  6. Dualism • At death • Soul leaves body goes to another existence • Or • Soul leaves the body and lives in an intermediate state before the resurrection

  7. Dualism • Problems • Mind does not seem to function independent of the brain and body • Little evidence of a disembodied spirit that exists independent of the body in Christian scriptures

  12. Critical Issues • Intermediate State • State between death and the next life • Is death a separation or do our souls leave our bodies? • Identity • How does our identity remain the same? • What is identity?

  13. Nonreductive Physicalism • Death is the end of this physical existence • Resurrection will be the reconstitution of ourselves into a new type of spiritual body • No evidence exists for this because it hasn’t happened yet, except maybe Jesus
