Objective 9-8: Factoring by Grouping

Objective 9-8: Factoring by Grouping. TASK : Students will factor a polynomial of four terms by grouping pairs of terms, factoring out separate GCFs and if left with the same common factor, use that and the Distributive Property to combine to make two binomial factors.

  1. Objective 9-8: Factoring by Grouping • TASK: • Students will factor a polynomial of four terms by grouping pairs of terms, factoring out separate GCFs and if left with the same common factor, use that and the Distributive Property to combine to make two binomial factors. • Students may factor out a GCF first before factoring by grouping to make the factoring a little easier. • Students may factor a trinomial that is hard to see the two binomial factors by looking at factors of the product ac that add up to b and then using grouping. • Students will use this information to factor a trinomial that gives the volume of a 3-D figure (like a prism) • WHY: • Factoring a polynomial expression is needed when students work with polynomial expression and looking for places where the graph crosses the x-axis.
