Superheroes ( about animals’ records) Introduction: The 2013 Olympics showed some pretty high speeds , but some animals can do much better than the famous sportsmen .
A cheetah can reach a top speed of 96-102 km/hour . Its spine is very flexible and bends up and down , giving its legs a longer stride . But such fast sprints are tiring and cheetahs quickly become very hot . After about 400 metres , they need a good rest .
Both pumas and African leopards have been seen to jump 5,5 metres up into a tree .
Sea snakes can dive 100 metres deep and stay under water for up to 5 hours . Some sea snakes can swim at the rate of 1 metres per second .
Incredibly , the sablefish can swim faster than a cheetah can run . Its top speed is 109 km an hour .
Squirrel monkeys sometimes leap straight into the air from the tree tops to catch insects . Sometimes these leaps are up to 60 meters .
Mountain goats can climb incredibly steep slopes , jump from rock to rock and leap across dangerous ravines.
The black mamba can reach speeds of 25 km per hour in short bursts . It races along with its head and the front of the body raised , mouth open and tongue flicking .
The red kangaroos can jump over obstacles as high as 3 meters . Using their powerful hind legs , they can travel as far as 9 meters in one huge bound .
Gibbons are extremely acrobatic . They can move through the trees faster than a man can run on the ground underneath . They can also walk along small branches high up in the air , like tightrope walkers .
