Water Cycle and Groundwater Chapter 9
Draw a picture below of what you remember of the water cycle: Now examine page 185 in the workbook and add on any new terms to your diagram above (or draw a new one below).
Define the following Terms: GROUNDWATER, TRANSPIRATION, PRECIPITATION, INFILTRATION, HYDROLOGIC CYCLE • GROUNDWATER: water that seeps into the ground;subsurface water • PRECIPITATION: any form of water falling from clouds • INFILTRATION: process whereby water seeps into the gound • TRANSPIRATION: process whereby plants give off water • HYDROLOGIC CYCLE: the water cycle
4. How much of Earth’s surface is covered in water? 5. Where is most of that water found? Give percents 71% 97% salt water, 2% frozen, and 1% drinking water
See pages 302-303 in textbook and copy and label the illustration of the water table. Include groundwater zones. Use colored pencils.
Define the following groundwater zones: • ZONE OF AERATION: zone or layer of soil with air pockets or pores • WATER TABLE: “stream” of water flowing underground; flows downhill with gradient • ZONE OF SATURATION: zone or layer of soil where the pores are filled with water • IMPERMEABLE ROCK: zone or layer where water cannot infiltrate or go through
FACTORS THAT DETERMINE WHETHER WATER INFILTRATES: • A. Pore space available (porosity) • B. If the water can seep in (permeable) • C. Type of sediment (sorted or unsorted) • D. Topography of the land-steep slope verses flat land
Review Questions • Water inputting into the water cycle is ____________________________from lakes or _______________________________from plants. • Water released by the atmosphere is called ____________________________. • Water __________________________to form a cloud. • Can water infiltrate impermeable rock?________________ • Under which conditions will water best evaporate?___________________________ • Under which conditions will water best infiltrate into the ground?____________________________________________________________________ • Which has the greatest porosity? A sample of cobbles or a sample of sand? and why?______________________________________________________________
