  4. www.buildingamerica.gov RESNET Partnership with DOE Building America and Habitat for Humanity Affiliates Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) builds homes around the world for and with people in need. Habitat for Humanity affiliates, the grass roots organizations that make it all happen, raise money locally and work with local volunteers to build simple, decent homes for qualified buyers at no interest and no profit. Mortgage payments go back into the building fund. Since 1994, The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America program has been working with HFHI and local Habitat affiliates who want to build more energy efficient homes. Technical assistance helps affiliates make smarter choices and spend limited resources more wisely. But the real winners are the home owners who reap year after year in utility savings – often with improved durability, indoor air quality, and comfort. RESNET is a professional organization of home energy raters and service providers that work with builders, like Habitat affiliates, throughout the country to plan and certify energy efficient construction. RESNET members produce Home Energy Ratings, help builders reach energy efficiency goals (like Energy Star), and work with the project managers to ensue that “as built” matches “as specified.” Building America is proud to introduce a partnership between RESNET’s network of professionals and with Habitat’s network of affiliates. Working together, RESNET volunteers and Habitat can deliver homes that use at least 15% less energy and provide a healthy, comfortable environment that will last for generations. 5. Project ExamplesHabitat is building energy-efficient, healthy and sustainable houses in communities around the world.More than a decade of Energy Star building. Since 1995 Habitat for Humanity International has partnered with the Florida Solar Energy Center and the Department of Energy’s Building America program to produce thousands of houses that are energy-efficient, durable and have healthy indoor air quality. Without funding, support and professional guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, much of this work would not have been possible. Building America works on numerous projects with local Habitat affiliates nationwide to improve the energy efficiency, comfort, durability and indoor air quality of new housing built with Habitat homeowners. One such recent project involving the Lakeland Habitat for Humanity affiliate of Florida reveals significant utility savings for homeowners living in high performance housing. The Oklahoma State tax credit (read more) of $4,000 is awarded to builders of new homes less than 2,000 square feet that are 40% or more above the 2003 International Energy Code. COHFH is allowed to sell its tax credit at the rate of eighty cents on the dollar generating $3,200 to offset the cost of energy efficiency improvements including: Partnership Organizations • Heating and Cooling System • Geothermal Heat Pump - Tranquility 20 Systems Donated By Climatemaster (Affiliate Pays For Installation And Drilling) • Room-by-room Manual J Calculation • Blower Door Infiltration Testing To Ensure Estimated Natural Infiltration Rate Of 0.35 Air Changes Per Hour Or Less • Ducts Sealed With Mastic And Tested To Ensure Leakage </= 5 Cfm Per 100 Square Feet Of Conditioned Space • Enclosure • 2x4 Frame construction, slab on grade with R-5 perimeter insulation • Spray foam insulation in Wall (~R-13) with R-4 exterior rigid insulation • Spray foam insulation at Roof deck (~R-19) in unvented attic • Low-E, double pane, vinyl frame windows (SHGC=/< 0.4 U-Value =/0.35) • Lighting – 100% Compact Fluorescent Bulbs • HERS Index ranges from 56-58 (85 or less required to meet Energy Star) Read more about the RESNET-Building America-Habitat partnership at: www.baihp.org/habitat To participate, contact: David Beal, Building America Research Analyst RESNET-BA-Habitat Partnership Coordinator 321-638-1433 david@fsec.ucf.edu Steve Sullivan, Coordinator Builder & Developer Programs OG&E - Electric Services Phone 405-553-3393 sullivsr@oge.com Building Technologies Program Bringing you a prosperous future where energy is clean, abundant, reliable, and affordable
