Discipleship • Read Matthew 14: 22-33 • What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? • Why did Peter think he could walk on water? • Why does he sink?
Christian Discipleship • Disciple / discipulus: a student; a pupil; a learner. One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.
Christian Discipleship • What is Peter thinking? • What makes him think he can walk on water?
Bets Efer ( 5- 10 yrs old) Torah: the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy
Bets Talmud • 10-15yrs old • From Genesis to Malachi
Bets-Midrash • Ages 15-20 • Dedicate his life to becoming a disciple of the Rabbi
What do people often say when Peter sinks? What do people often say when Peter sinks? • What do people often say when Peter sinks?
Christian Discipleship • The reason he sinks, everyone says, was because Peter takes his eyes off Jesus. Isn’t that what everyone says? They say he looses faith in Jesus. • But that’s conventional wisdom. What everyone thinks. And what did we learn earlier about conventional wisdom from the Apostle Paul?
Christian Discipleship • “…Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
Christian Discipleship • When Peter sinks in the water, he sinks because he looses faith in himself • Jesus doesn’t sink…He had faith in Peter, that he could walk on the water…Peter sank because he lost faith in himself that he could be like the Rabbi.
Christian Discipleship • To be a disciple, is to be like the rabbi… to do what the rabbi does… • And who is our rabbi?
Christian Discipleship • He wants us to have faith in him, but he also wants us to know that He has faith in us. To be a disciple, is to be like the rabbi, to do what the rabbi does.
Christian Discipleship • And so today, may you come to believe in God all over again. But may you come to believe and know that God also believes in you. • May you have faith in Jesus…our Rabbi…But may you also come to know that Jesus has faith in you.
