  2. Key Points • VSP is a user-friendly, graphical software tool for evaluating trade-offs between decision errors, sampling costs, and remediation costs • Alternative sampling designs can be reviewed and evaluated in real-time

  3. Purpose of VSP The purpose of VSP is to make environmental sampling design reliable, cost effective, and as simple as possible - but not simpler

  4. Quick Overview • Open a site map • Select a sample area • Select a sampling design • Specify error rates, action level, standard deviation, etc. • Note results on map, graph, and costs • Iterate with various designs until optimal • Take samples at x, y coordinates provided

  5. Detailed Examples • Simple random sampling of one acre field • Systematic grid with random start sampling of one acre field • Hot spot sampling of one acre field • Optional: “stratified” simple random sampling • Optional: MARSSIM Room

  6. VSP Demo Now we will see a demonstration of Visual Sample Plan, version 2.0

  7. Conclusions • VSP helps us understand the consequences of our assumptions • VSP makes us more efficient in evaluating and utilizing environmental sampling designs • GIGO; VSP depends on you for input • VSP is helpless without domain-specific knowledge and professional judgement
