Engineers for a Sustainable world UCSD startup 5/26/2010
How we started • Got an email • Few meetings • Lots of ideas
What we found out • Most already on campus (Engineers without Borders, Green Campus, Sustainability Coalition) • Poor publicizing
What we did • We joined them • No funding for ourselves
1st meeting • First meeting was a bit hectic • Room for 40 people, 60 people showed up • Kept about 35 people • 3 keynote speakers – Biomatrica, Faculty Advisor, Chris Prelitz
Results • Have about 40 members or so • Currently 4 different projects -Biomatrica -Green Bikes -Air Quality - Water Efficiency In the process of acquiring two more: compost team, and underwater component for tracking sea urchin travel with Scripps Institute of Oceanography
Biomatrica -Reduces cryogenic freezers -We have become their salesmen Symbiotic relationship where we both benefit from it
Green Bikes • Training bikes into generators • Worked with Triathlon team • Project has finished
Air Quality • Creating sensors to monitor particulate matter in the air
Water Efficiency Working with facilities on their irrigation In and around Giesel library
Difficulties • Funds • Communication with Facilities • Midterms • Persistence
