  1. Engineers for a Sustainable world UCSD member retention 3/22/2011

  2. Membership Retention • Membership - Defined (to me) as people who show up to participate in ESW events/projects

  3. Membership FluctuationTimeline • ~60 people show up to the first GBM each quarter • ~60 sign up for projects • ~50 show up to projects at least once • ~35 consistently show up each week • +5 throughout a quarter from word of mouth

  4. Things that get in the way • Midterms • “Too busy”

  5. Common Thread • Each project “naturally” holds 5 - 6 members • Project groups starting with 12 generally drop down to 5-6 members • Groups starting at 5 or 6 generally stay at 5 – 6 • People who join late, often leave early

  6. Thoughts on the group size • People want to “own” their project • Too many people, they don’t feel a responsibility to be there • People who join late think the project is cool, but never had a grounding to understand all of the basics

  7. Solution • More projects! • Generally, we find interested parties whether it be facilities, faculty, or businesses to do a project • We propose it to the general body asking for interest and leaders • If someone wants to lead it, the project is then formed and we have another 5 – 6 members doing something sustainably meaningful

  8. Biomatrica -Reduces cryogenic freezers -We have become their salesmen Symbiotic relationship where we both benefit from it

  9. Green Bikes • Training bikes into generators • Worked with Triathlon team • Project has finished

  10. Air Quality • Creating sensors to monitor particulate matter in the air

  11. Water Efficiency Working with facilities on their irrigation In and around Giesel library

  12. Difficulties • Funds • Communication with Facilities • Midterms • Persistence
