Who is Lakshmi? • Goddess Lakshmi means good luck to Hindus • The word Lakshmi is derived from the Sanskrit word “Laksya” meaning aim or goal • She's a goddess of wealth, prosperity, light, wisdom, fertility, generosity and the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm • She has a festive month in October and celebrated on the full moon

Who is Lakshmi? • Lakshmi is the wife of Vishnu • She comes every year during the Hindu holiday of Diwali • Hindu’s celebrate this goddess of fortune and invite her into their homes attempting to secure her favours for the years to come • She has 3 forms : Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (for books and learning) and Mahakali

Story of Lakshmi • Born when Devas (minor gods) fighting against Asuras(demons) to obtain Amrit (nectar of immortality) • Devas consulted Vishnu who was on earth as Kurma ( a tortoise) • They churned the ocean for the Amrit and they did that by threading the serpent Vasuki around Mount Mandara • Kurma tried to balance Mount Manara on his back • Because of his cosmic clutch, the mountain couldn't sink into the ocean • The gods received the nectar of immortality from Lakshmi • Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her partner
