Types of cable • Cat 5/5e • Plenum Coating • PVC • Cat 6/6e • Fiber
Cat 5/5e • Cat 5 • Rated to 100 Mbps • Cat5e • Cat 5 enhanced • Supports 100 Mbps or 1Gbps • Stricter specifications • Power Sum Equal-Level Far-End Crosstalk • Near-End crosstalk • Attenuation, Return Loss • 3 twists per inch • The more twists per-inch, the more noise rejection.
Cat 6 • Cat 6 • Higher performance than Cat 5e • Performance relies on all components of the channel • Jacks • Patch-panels/cables • Cross connects • Cable
Rules for running cable • Things to watch for • Fluorescent lighting • Stay 12 inches or more away • Transformers / Electric motors • 40 inches or more • Power lines • No less than 5 in. • Higher the power– further away wiring should be
Maximum Distances • 100 meters for cat 5/5e/6 • To increase it, use a hub/repeater/bridge, etc…
Important but forgotten • Cable relies on the twists • Untwisting for ends should be as little as possible • No more than ½ inch for Cat 5 • If you must cross with an electrical wire or conduit, they should cross at a 90 degree angle. • 25 lbs of pressure can untwist the pairs.
