  1. Magnetism and magnets By Matthew Cornelius

  2. How it Works • Magnetic fields are formed in atoms by the movement of negatively charged electrons. This gives the atom a north and south pole. • Domains are magnetic areas where the atoms line up. • Materials have a strong magnetic field when the domains align and the north is pointing north and the south is pointing south.

  3. Magnetic Materials • Iron • Nickel • Cobalt • The domains in these materials align and they create and strong magnetic force.

  4. Properties of Magnets • All magnets have two poles, north and south. • Exert force, for example the force they exert on other magnetic substances. • All magnets are surrounded by a magnetic field.

  5. Does Earth Have a Magnetic Field • The poles of Earth point magnets in a certain direction. The north points a compass north and the south points a magnet south. • Magnetic field protects the Earth from charged particles that come from the Sun. • Scientists think the magnetic field is caused by the movement of electrons in the Earths core. This is plausible because the core contains iron and nickel.
