TOPPS - objectives • Develop and propose Best Management Practices (BMPs) to mitigate losses of Plant Protection Products (PPP) to surface water from Point + Diffuse Sources(Water protection Umbrella!) • Develop and provide information, training and demonstrations to farmers, advicers and stakeholders(awareness, improve techniques and infrastructure) • Disseminate materials and knowledge (train the trainers) and contribute to the implementation of the WFD and SUD
TOPPS - principles • Broad regional coverage to create critical mass for the transfer of BMPs to other countries • Stakeholder participation to support acceptance and implementation • Multiskilled projectteams contribute competences ranging from science, applied research to farm advice
TOPPS – perspectivesBMPs are derived from different perspectives Correct BehaviourBest Management Practice (BMPs) Education + Training + Advice • Technique • Sprayer • Equipment • Crop rotation • Tillage practices • Irrigation • Others • Infrastructure • Filling / Washing places • Remnant management systems • Storage • Container recycling • Buffer strips / hedges • Others BMPs : recommendations on Best Management Practices
TOPPS - approach Discussion with national stakeholders and consolidation of BMPs Discussion of BMPs with stakeholders on an EU level ( today!) Development of BMPs amongpartners • Wegotvaluablefeedbackfrom national stakeholders on proposedmeasures • Measuresproposedare a referencetodevelopinformationandtrainingmaterials • Main targetofthemeasuresproposedisgenericriskmitigationanddoes not interferewith PPP registrationrequirements
TOPPS – complexity complexity Point source Spray drift Runoff /Erosion high low FarmBMPs general Operator Field / CropBMPs specific Mainly operator Catchment / fieldBMPs specificbeyond operators
TOPPS – harmonisation and transfer • Currently level of harmonized BMPs among EU countries is low • BMPs can be harmonised on the level „What to do“ • BMPs local adaptions on the level „ How to do“ • BMP local adaption needs for point sources very low, might be higher with diffuse source BMPs EU –CORE local adaptions
Program of today (1) In the morning we concentrate on Risk diagnosis and on the concept to link diagnosis and mitigation measures Greg Doruchowski: Diagnosis and decision tool - drift Julie Maillet Mezeray / Jeremy Dyson: Diagnosis concept - runoff/erosion Aldo Ferrero: Example of a catchment diagnosis Discussion & clarification Volker Laabs: Introduction of BMP mitigation measures - runoff Tom Robinson: Introduction of BMP mitigation measures - drift
Program of today (2) Lunch 12.15 to 13.15
Program of today (3) 13.15 to 15.002 Break out group sessions Discussion of proposed mitigation measures
Why break out groups • Drift and runoff mitigation measures will be presented and should be discussed in the groups. • Please share with us your expertise, your support and also your concerns • Priority will be given on „what to do“ (the European core) • Stakeholder involvement from the beginning helps to get BMPs clarified, accepted, supported and endorsed • Please get involved
www.TOPPS-life.org New website launched today !!! • Knowledge and information sharing platform to reduce PPP losses to water • Comfortable search functions • Materials in various languages • Presentations, Training and Demonstration materials • Pictures, videos
www.TOPPS-life.org Structure • First step • Point source • Diffuse source • EOS • RemnantMgt. • Guide forwaterprotection Second step
www.TOPPS-life.org • With the new website we want to • provide a better user experience • provide easy to use tools and information • attract more visitors • help spread the word about TOPPS • (see more info in your handout)
I wish you all an interesting day • Thanks for your attention
