2013 Under 13 Junior Premier League. Questions…. Does your current team play out from the back or “bomb” the ball long? How often do your centre backs play the ball square and wide to full backs? How often does your current team play back, possibly all the way to the keeper, to “start again”?

  1. 2013 Under 13 Junior Premier League

  2. Questions…. • Does your current team play out from the back or “bomb” the ball long? • How often do your centre backs play the ball square and wide to full backs? • How often does your current team play back, possibly all the way to the keeper, to “start again”? • Does your current team place importance on the number of touches and passes the team gets? • Is the emphasis “get it forward quickly” or “passing, possession and patience”? • Do you get 5 touches a game or 50? • Is the style of play and your time on the ball sufficient for your development in your current team? If not – then you need to change your team and your coach.

  3. Coaching focus Whatmost players experience: What our players experience: • Repetitive Drills that teach only one or two aspects (technical and physical) • Limited touches during matches • Winning at all costs • Constant instruction and orders during matches from an ego-centric coach • Age appropriate game based activities featuring the four pillars of football (technique, tactics, psychology and physicality) • Enjoyment and development through touching the ball A LOT • Primary focus is development – winning will follow • Decision making and problem solving learned through game related sessions with a player-centric approach

  4. Why is “Guided Discovery” our preferred method of coaching and developing players? • It encourages players to find the solutions. • Players who solve the problems for themselves are more likely to retain that knowledge. • It teaches players “How” to think not “What” to think. • It encourages creativity in players.

  5. Why are we stressing the need to develop players and teams who can play out from the back and build up effectively? • It is a weakness in Australian football • It has been identified as a key area to improve by the FFA and the FFSA. • The best teams / players in the world do it. • Effective possession is the cornerstone of modern football at the highest level. • The objective is to give the ball to a forward player in such a way that the chances of scoring are greatly increased.

  6. Aims • Adopt a fundamental understanding of the modern 4-3-3 playing system • Create technically aware players capable of competing with, and winning against, the most prominent city based teams • Achieve as many wins as possible through attractive, technically based football. • Do not compromise the long term development of players for the sake of short term success. • Achieve State Team selection for as many players as possible.

  7. What do Panthers offer? • Implementation of a prepared season long development plan • Well planned and structured training sessions • Quality instruction and demonstration from qualified experienced coaches including guest coaches from the FFSA and independent Academies • Training designed to foster creativity, imagination and game intelligence • Limited but relevant interjection during training • Players are engaged from start to finish • Players enjoy practice, and play with a heightened level of enthusiasm • Pathways towards representative football

  8. Does your current coach embrace representative football? • The FFA and FFSA run various representative elite programs • We are actively involved in coaching at these FFSA programs • Panthers fully support these programs and habitually nominate players with great success • The playing system we adopt reflects that of the FFA and FFSA • Players are educated, train and play under these systems to ensure familiarity Selection chances are greatly increased as a result.

  9. LIONEL MESSI • What the coaches noticed about Messiwas the consistency of his performance and effort regardless of playing environment. He played with the same level of enthusiasm with the third team as he did with the first team. It made no difference to him. He gave his all 100% of the time. • How many players today moan and gripe about not making a first team? They do not give the same level of effort. Forget about the players, the parents won’t stand for it. They prefer to shop around until their kids make a first team somewhere. Usually at the expense of the player’s development. This is a massive mistake, as all the life lessons to be gained from facing some adversity are lost. • This is the one thing young players should know about Messi…He was not always selected for a first team. He did not leave for greener pastures. He did what all great players do. He took responsibility and got better because he believed the coaching environment was right. • Messi didn’t concern himself with playing above his age range. He played in teams that were suitable to his ability where he could ensure plenty of time on the ball. He knew that the over challenging environment of an older team would ultimately hinder his progression as his touches during games would be limited.

  10. Loyalty –Team and Club • Building loyalty to team mates • Entrusting loyalty to coaches • Earning respect in return – from players and coaches • Playing for the team and the club – not for the individual • Creating a core group that will encourage and help each other and endure years of success

  11. No Guarantees! • Panthers Under 13 will run an A and B team • Competition for places will be high • There are no guarantees any player will be selected • The player’s ability, attitude and commitment will determine their team selection

  12. What is the Ultimate Goal? Winning the under 13 title and making the coach look good - whatever the cost? NO Developing the players to the best of their potential and maintaining their passion for the game? ABSOLUTELY We want to develop quality first team footballers who go on to have long careers. Not 12 year old world beaters who do nothing as teenagers.

  13. Can You Wait? • The current crop of Barcelona superstars mainly came through their own academy that harbours a long term development strategy. • Players like Messi, Xavi and Iniesta played many games as teenagers in the losing side. Opposition players were bigger, stronger and faster. Over time these three technically astute players became increasingly more competitive. • Had their coaches and parents wanted short term success they would have moved them. They knew the process was right and were prepared to wait, years if need be, for overwhelming success. • Look at them now. Household names, the world’s best, playing a brand of football that everyone wants to emulate. Do you want it now or are you prepared to work hard, wait and be the best?
