Movement Toward Change • Christian Humanism People had the ability to reason and improve themselves - reading works of Christianity would provide religious feeling Erasmus- “philosophy of Christ” - People had to live good lives. - Faith alone could not save you What does it mean to live a good life? Can you provide me with an example? Erasmus’ writing, The Praise of Folly, stated that people had to do good works and have faith.

  4. Why Did the Reformation Happen? Corruption by the Popes: - Involvement in political matters - Interested in wealth salvation through indulgences Pope Alexander VI is an example of a corrupt Pope before the Reformation.

  5. Martin Luther The Start of the Reformation Ninety-five Theses: Posted on the Castle Church in Wittenberg Attacked the sale of indulgences! RESULT Martin Luther became an outlaw Lutheranism was created!

Opposition to Lutheranism • Charles V- Holy Roman Emperor - He tried to stop the church from splitting with military strength - He was unsuccessful • Peace of Augsburg - Lutheranism was accepted in Germany - Common people worshipped as their rulers did! RESULT What would you do if someone forced you to worship as they did?

Other Christian Beliefs CALVINISM ANGLICAN (Church of England) Henry VIII – founder - wanted his marriage annulled - Catholic church refused - 1534 The Act of the Supremacy The King is the Head of the Church of England • John Calvin -founder - predestination - by 1600 it became one of the most popular forms of Christianity in Europe. RESULT True or False: Explain- Calvinism was extremely strict! People could be punished for behavior that the church did not approve! OPPOSITION ! TRUE! A special church group, called the Consistory, punished people for singing obscene songs, dancing, and even playing cards! Queen Mary was given the nickname “Bloody Mary”.   9. Catholic/Counter Reformation Jesuits -Ignatius of Loyola- founder -Restored Catholicism in some parts of Europe and spread it to other parts of the world. Reform Commission Popes could no longer be involved in political affairs. Council of Trent - Traditional Catholic beliefs would be upheld but indulgences could not be sold! Ignatius of Loyola
