Math League History • 美国“数学大联盟杯赛” (Math League) 是美国及北美地区影响力最大的中小学数学赛事, 也是一项具有全球影响力的中小学生数学赛事。 • 美国“数学大联盟杯赛”第一届竞赛于1977年举行, 至今已经连续举办了35年。 • 每年有来自全球的超过一百万名中小学生参加。
Math League History • Mr. Steven R. Conrad & Mr. Daniel Flegler: 美国著名的数学教育家 • 1985年荣获由里根总统颁发的“杰出数学教育总统奖”。 • 1977年Mr. Daniel Flegler获得普林斯顿大学颁发的“卓越中学教育奖” • 担任了六年的美国SAT 组委会会员(SAT是美国大学的入学考试)。 • 担任了很多数学杂志的主编和审阅人。他们是美国十五个州和地区的数学竞赛组委会主任委员或委员。 • 共同出版了15本书。

Fermat’s Last Theorem • Around 1637, Fermat wrote his Last Theorem in the margin of his copy of the Arithmetica next to Diophantus' sum-of-squares problem: • it is impossible to separate a cube into two cubes, or a fourth power into two fourth powers, or in general, any power higher than the second, into two like powers. I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain. • However, in the last thirty years of his life, Fermat never again wrote of his "truly marvellous proof" of the general case.
Fermat’s Last Theorem • No successful proof was published until 1995 despite the efforts of countless mathematicians during the 358 intervening years. • The unsolved problem stimulated the development of algebraic number theory in the 19th century and the proof of the modularity theorem in the 20th century.
Fermat’s Last Theorem • The proof itself is over 100 pages long and consumed seven years of Wiles's research time. • Modularity Theorem (part), enough to imply Fermat’s Last Theorem (Ph.D. student: Brian Conrad, 1 of 6) • Full modularity theorem was then proved.
