Beowulf Cluster: Proposal By: Calvin Sauerbier, Adam Albertson, Garrison Vaughan, Joshua Nester, Jonathan Pingilley
Purpose • The purpose of this assignment is to setup up and configure a “Beowulf like” cluster so that we can effectively distributed processes between different machines. This will then limit the load on individual machines. The programs run on the cluster can be processed at a faster rate thus producing more efficient processing in most cases.
Outline • Hardware • Network Topology • OS/System Software • MOSIX Cluster • Benchmark Tool • LINPACK • LAPPACK • Applying Distributed Environment
Hardware • Utilizing 2 pods • 3 Computers at each pod (6 total) • 64-bit architecture machines • 1 Control System (Boss) • 4 Slaves (Workers) • 1x24-port Cisco Switch
Network Topology • High Level View
OS/System Software • openSUSE 12.2 64-bit • Distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07436 • Relatively easy to install • Uses KDE as default desktop, it will run GNOME 2 though. • Community • More active users • Contribution of code • Documentation and help • Performance • Faster startup speeds (compared to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, Debian, etc.) • Uses RPM (package management)
MOSIX • MOSIX: http://www.mosix.org • Cluster operating system targeted at high-performance computing. • Linux clusters (our case), multi-clusters, GPU Clusters (FOLDING@Home), Clouds • Supports interactive processes, batch jobs • Installation and configuration: http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/wikis/MediaWiki/mosix/index.php/Installation_and_configuration • Simple: Automatic installation using ./mosix.install • Manual: Manual installation
openSUSE & MOSIX • Why the combination? • RPMs released for openSUSE 12.2 with MOSIX-3.1.1.1 • Features:
Benchmarking Tools • LINPACK • Library used to perform numerical linear algebra on computers. • Written in Fortran • HPL (High-Performance Linpack) • Link: http://www.netlib.org/benchmark/hpl/ • Other information…
Applying Distributed Environment • POEM@HOME • Protein Optimization with Energy Methods:http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/ • FOLDING@HOME • Protein Folding • Alzheimer’s disease research • Huntington’s disease research • Cancer research • Viruses • Other Projects: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php
