The faculty of mathematics and natural sciences — the key to development and growth in the future society Increasing interest for petroleum industry: OG21!
The faculty of mathematics and natural sciences • Established as part of the Faculty of philosophy in 1811 and became a separate faculty in 1861 • 4,300 students and approximately 1000 man-years • 9 departments • Several interdisciplinary centres and research programs, among them: • 2 Norwegian centres of excellence • Associated one centres of excellence • 1 Nordic centre of excellence • UiO: High international score • UiO nr 2 i Norden 37.plass i Europa og 101.plass på verdensbasis
Regular programs Special studies Informatics/Pharmacy Education – degree structure (after the Bologna process)
Internationalisation – general principles • Promote high quality research groups • Complete Master and PhD program in English • Establish various types of EU based networks • Erasmus Mundus: • European Union as a center of excellence in learning around the world (“Brain Gain”) • Various other international relationships • To be presented in following slides: • Examples on educational programs and research directly related to the petroleumindustry
Department of geosciences Master of Science study in Petroleum Geology and Geophysics A broad and interdisciplinary study covering most aspects of exploration to field development and production.
Department of Mathematics • Computational solid mechanics - nonlinear finite element analysis • Instability/buckling analysis of, e.g., risers, pipelines, plates • Analysis of light weight structures such as, e.g., composite risers and adhesive joints • Experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics: • Vortex Induced Vibrating cylinders modeled by high speed Particle Image Velocimetry • Particle Image Velocimetry estimates of Turbulent Kinetic Energy in Slug Flow / Multiphase flow • Extreme ocean surface waves (freak waves) and internal solitons in the ocean by rapid computer models and experiments.
Department of Mathematics • Risk analysis - stochastic modelling: • - Fast models for production profiles • - Total value chain analysis • - Real option analysis
The MINA-laboratory With 400 m2 clean room Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology Jointly with department of Chemistry and Physics • Broad spectre of activities related to material sciences including micro- and sensor technology • Close cooperation with SINTEF and IFE
Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology • Catalytic materials and adsorbents • gas conversion; CO2 and H2 adsorption • Ionic conductors; oxide membranes • catalytic membranes; gas separation, fuel cells; H- and O-conductors • Microtechnology • sensors; MEMS; semiconductors for harsh conditions; thin films of functional materials
utilization of natural gas Fundamental understanding of the Reaction mechanism Metanol Olefins As the basis for rational development of new catalysts The catalysis group Unni Olsbye and Karl Petter Lillerud The focused problem: Research vision:
Department of Informatics • Acoustic imaging systems – sonar and sea floor mapping • Jointly with Department of geosciences • Special program at “profesjonsstudiet” (Ifi) • International master • Special program under Department of Innovation and entrepreneurship • Jointly with offshore industry
The Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES)/Department of Biology A multi-disciplinary group whose work is based on the latest developments in molecular genetics and statistical/computer-based methods • Strongly involved marine ecosystem analyses • Barents Sea • A French Norwegian network on the analysis of long-term ecological data
Suggestions for the future • Link research and education to industrial activity • Strong international competition • Norwegian research institutes and universities: • A joint Norwegian “school” or “national cluster” of Petroleum Science and Technology?
