Who is Yachting Victoria ? • Industry Association for sailing & boating clubs • State Sporting Association for sailing • Boating Victoria - a recognised Division – for clubs with substantial power boat membership
Who is Yachting Victoria ? • Elected representative body – Executive (of 10 ) • 12 Executive Sub Committees – both divisional (eg Keelboat) and technical (eg Rules) – 120 + people • Staff of 10 – several part time

Background • Current YV strategic plan developed in 2004/5 • Club Conference input and feedback Sept 2004 • Draft plan reviewed by Executive & staff & Committee Chairs – late 2004 • Improved draft reviewed with Clubs in Feb 05 • New Vision, Mission & Objectives approved by clubs in March 2005 • Annual Questionnaire for feedback - September • YA plan in parallel
Summary of 2004 Input from Clubs • Lots of feedback about YV needing to demonstrate more value & relevance • Major issue = communication • Participation & membership levels stagnant • Sailing ranks in 30’s on sports participation • Some disenchanted member groups eg Power Boats
What’s needed ? • Leadership • A clear common view of what we want to achieve (a vision) • A clear common view of the role of Yachting Victoria in achieving it ( a mission) • A plan to go forward based on • Agreed Objectives • Agreed Priorities
New (2005) Vision • Extend to social sailing and boating X Not just a sport for middle class, middle aged men, who want to race Sailing and Boating will be recognised as an enjoyable, accessible, safe sport and a lifetime recreation for everyone.
New (2005) Mission • Narrow YV to focus more on the needs of clubs (who in turn serve their members) To have more people participating, more successfully, and more enjoyably in Sailing and Boating at member clubs
New (2005) Objectives • Participation - Encourage the maximum possible number of people to participate at member clubs • Strategic Representation - Ensure that the infrastructure is attractive to people and affordable & secure for clubs • Coaching (including high performance) - Increase the success of competitive sailors. • Training - Maximize the number of people trained in boating and sailing at member clubs, and the number of volunteers & staff supporting them • Competition & Event Development - Increase safe participation in club based events and the expertise of member clubs in event and race management • Service to Member Clubs - Optimise the effectiveness and efficiency of member clubs through the exchange of information and provision of services and advice • Admin Secretarial & Governance - Ensure our own administration is effective and efficient, and delivers proper governance and support.
What are the priority objectives ? • Training • Greater marketing of sail training as a way into the sport & more & better YATC’s • Training of Volunteers via YV • Service to Clubs • Educating clubs in the extensive resources available • Creating opportunities for clubs to exchange information • Marketing Participation • Attracting new members – especially juniors & youth • Brand/Image improvement • Sponsorship & Media exposure • Databased marketing – using data captured by MyClub to better understand members and market
Other objectives • Strategic Representation • continue to respond to issues as they arise in short term eg PFD’s, Marine Safety, Ports, Parks, Weather • Major long term issue of club tenure and foreshore leases • Coaching • develop coaches to serve clubs & classes • improve Victorian sailors performance • Competition & Event Development • Develop existing events & clubs & race management • YV’s own admin, governance & secretarial support • Revise Rules and ByLaws • Support to our committees especially
Boating Victoria • A new division of Yachting Victoria representing power boat owners at both yacht clubs and previous maritime clubs • These members equally have a need for assistance with strategic representation, club management, marketing, training, competition & event development etc • Works with BIA – industry association
Go Sailing & boating Program • State Government Funded $400k from Volvo Ocean Race Melbourne Stop Over Surplus • Stage A – club volunteer development (2007) • Club Survey • Training – Race Officers, Instructors, and Coaches • Stage B – participation programs (2008) • Kids (Tackers) • Schools Teams • Sailability • Women

YV Club Affiliation Fees • Major changes voted in overwhelmingly by clubs in March 2007, after 2 years of consultation • Clubs – a category system – total YV Income $360k in 2007/8 • 9 categories from $300 to $52,000 pa – 80 clubs • Based on total membership and fees income • Scope for appeals & relief (eg Drought) • Payable in 2 parts – September and December • YA fees additional – calculated per head ( but members are of the club not YA or YV ) • $24 per adult and $12.50 per youth / junior • For anyone who votes or boats • Racing Rules of Sailing – Rules 46 & 55 • Silver card recognises club membership and provides personal accident insurance

Yachting Australia • The Australian Sailing Team – Government funded = high performance program • One full time Coach in Victoria • Training – Courses, content & material • Club Services – • IT services (MyClub, MyClass, My Centre and MySite) • development of policies eg Membership Protection • Insurance schemes eg public liability • National Officiating program & rules administration .
What’s desired of Clubs ? • Recognition of the benefit of a strong peak body • Feedback and involvement in YV & this plan • Resourcing of YV through funding – application of affiliation fees consistent with rules, by laws and other clubs.
