Regular Exercise & Long Term Benefits. A Presentation
Effects of Regular exercise • Decreased Resting Heart Rate • Increased Recovery Heart Rate • Increased Stroke Volume • Increased Cardiac Output • Decrease Blood Pressure • Healthy Veins, Capillaries and Arteries • Decreased risk of Coronary Heart Disease
Heart Becomes Bigger & Stronger So it can supply the same amount of blood with fewer beats. Decrease Resting Heart rate
This is the speed at which the heart rate returns to normal after exercise. The faster the recovery, the fitter the person Recovery Rate
Definition: the volume of blood pumped out of the heart by each ventricle during one contraction. This increases with exercise anyway but with regular exercisethe heart becomes stronger the heart is able to pump more blood out during each beat Increased Stroke Volume
Definition: The amount of blood ejected from the heart in 1 minute. Stroke Volume x Heart Rate = Cardiac Output This increases with exercise. Cardiac Output
This reduces with regular exercise Because it helps with weight loss, reducing stress etc. Blood Pressure
Increased number of capillaries Less chance of a blocked blood vessel because blood vessels become more flexible and efficient Healthy Blood Vessels
Diet & the Heart: Macro-Nutrient Fat • Not all fats are bad for you, unsaturated fats are healthy, saturated animal fats are unhealthy and full of bad cholesterol. • Fats provide slow energy and 20-25% of our diet should be fats • Walking and low impact exercises will use energy from fats. • Good fats can be found in oils, fish and nuts. Bad fats are found in dairy and animals
Cholesterol • There are two types of cholesterol, these are: • HDL = high density lipoprotein (this is good cholesterol, it unblocks arteries of the bad cholesterol) • LDL = low density lipoprotein: (this is bad and leads to health problems)
Biggest cause of Coronary Heart Disease Damages the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart, the blood vessels and the blood carrying capacity Cause High Blood Pressure Decreases aerobic fitness Smoking effects on the body
Nicotine is a stimulant as it raises alertness. It is however VERY addictive.
Classwork/Homework • Following your last homework on the IMMEDIATE effects of exercise on the 4 systems. Now: draw a poster with the LONG-TERM effects of regular exercise for the 4 systems • Circulatory (we did today) • Respiratory • Muscles • Skeletal
