3. Purpose This presentation was created in order to present projects created to prepare me for the role of a library media specialist. The projects included in this presentation have been aligned to the standards of the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians and College of Education descriptors. 4. Personal Introduction • My name is Tracy Stewart. I am a Kindergarten teacher at Mirror Lake Elementary. This is my fifth year teaching. I have been in Kindergarten for 4 years and 1st grade my first year teaching. • I have prepared a resume that presents my personal information, professional experience, and skills. 5. Leadership Role of the Media Specialist The media specialist must fulfill many roles within the learning community to foster a successful media program. These roles include instructional partner, teacher, instructional specialist, and program administrator. I have presented these roles in detail in a power point presentation. 6. Tour of the Media Center The media center has many resources available to the school community. Many times the patrons of the media center are not aware of all the resources that they could be using. One way to make the patrons more aware of all of the services and resources of the media center is through a tour of the media center where they can view at their convenience. 7. Policies and Procedures Handbook One of the most important parts of a successful media program is the inclusion of and active use of a policies and procedures handbook. The policies and procedures that are set forth for the media center should be the driving force in the decisions that are made within the media center. 8. Course Reflections Each course through this program has lead me to the learning of many skills and standards that have prepared me to be an effective library media specialist. Each thing I have learned has been connected to an American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians standard and a College of Education descriptor. 10. Instructional Design Paper • ALA/AASL Standard : 1.1Efficient and Ethical Information Seeking Behavior: Candidates model strategies to locate, evaluate and use information for specific purposes. Candidates identify and address student interests and motivations. Candidates interact with the learning community to access, communicate and interpret intellectual content. Candidates adhere to and communicate legal and ethical policies.

11. Instructional Design Paper • The instructional design paper was created in order to present the skills I gained through the completion of assignments in the instructional design course. These assignments influenced my knowledge in the area of instructional design. 12. Media Log • ALA/AASL Standard : 1.2 Literacy and Reading Candidates are aware of major trends in reading material for children and youth. Candidates select materials in multiple formats to address the needs and interests of diverse young readers and learners. Candidates use a variety of strategies to promote leisure reading. They model their personal enjoyment of reading in order to promote the habits of creative expressing and lifelong reading.

13. Media Log • The media log was prepared during the course Selection and Materials in order to bring awareness to all genres and trends in literature and materials for school age children and adults. 14. Reconsideration Policy • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 1.3 Access to Information Candidates support flexible and open access for the library media center and its services. Candidates identify barriers to equitable access to resources and services. Candidates facilitate access to information in print, non-print, and electronic formats. Candidates comply with and communicate the legal and ethical codes of the profession.

15. Reconsideration Policy • The reconsideration policy was created as part of the policies and procedure handbook. 16. Two Year Media Plan • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 1.4 Stimulating Learning Environment Candidates demonstrate ways to establish and maintain a positive educational climate in the library media center. Candidates identify relationships among facilities, programs, and environment that impact student learning. Candidates plan and organize library media centers according to their use by the learning community.

17. Two Year Media Plan • The two year media plan was created to develop media center activities and programs that would run from school year to school year. These activities were created to promote the media program within the school community. This assignment will help with the organization of the media center’s program. 18. School Wide Media Program • ALA/AASL Standard : 2.1 Knowledge of Learners and Learning Candidates design library media instruction that assesses learner interest, needs, instructional methodologies, and information processes to assure that each is integral to information skills instruction. Candidates support learning of all students and other members of the learning community, including those with diverse learning styles abilities and needs. Information skills instruction is based on student interests and learning needs and is linked to student achievement.

19. School Wide Media Program • The School Wide Media Program was created to develop a plan to create a program for the media center that would include all grade levels by aligning activities that would happen through the media program with grade level standards. This assignment gave exposure to planning school wide activities that encouraged library standards and state curriculum standards. This will also encourage students to participate in the ongoing activities that will promote life long learners. 20. In-service Project • ALA/AASL Standard : 2.2 Effective and Knowledgeable Teacher Candidates work with classroom teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess information skills instruction. The library media specialist as teacher of information skills makes use of a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools. Candidates analyze the role of student interest and motivation in instructional design. Student learning experiences are created, implemented and evaluated in partnership with teachers and other educators.

21. In-service Project • The In-Service Project was created in order to provide the experience of collaboration with teachers for the planning and implementation of instruction. This assignment allowed me to realize the need for in-service throughout the school. It doesn’t always have to be on technology issues, but it could be anything that deals with student learning. 22. Technology Job Aide • ALA/AASL Standard : 2.3 Information Literacy Curriculum Candidates employ strategies to integrate the information literacy curriculum with content curriculum. Candidates incorporate technology to promote efficient and equitable access to information beyond print resources. Candidates assist students to use technology to access, analyze, and present information.

23. Technology Job Aide • The Technology Job Aide was created to give patrons of the media center a guide to a piece of technology that students and teachers can access through the media center webpage. I created a guide for QuizStar. QuizStar is a way for students and teachers to use technology in an efficient way. 24. Current Topic Research/Interview • ALA/AASL Standard : 3.1 Connection with Library Community Candidates demonstrate the potential for establishing connections to other libraries and the larger library community for resource sharing, networking, and developing common policies and procedures. Candidates articulate the role of their professional associations and journals in their own professional growth.

25. Current Topic Research/Interview • The current topic research/interview was conducted to bring awareness of topics involved in the media center today. This assignment required communications with media specialists who are dealing with issues within the media center on a daily basis. My current issue dealt with authority control within the OPAC system. This brought along new issues with me and knowing clearly what authority control is all about. 26. Selection Policy • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 3.2 Instructional Partner Candidates model, share, and promote ethical and legal principles of education and librarianship. Candidates acknowledge the importance of participating on school and district committees and in faculty staff development opportunities.

27. Selection Policy • The Selection Policy was created in order to set forth requirements for the selection of materials. Internet Filtering Paper • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 3.3 Educational Leader Candidates are able to articulate the relationship of the library media program with current educational trends and important issues. Candidates recognize the role of other educational professionals and professional associations. Candidates translate for the school the ways in which the library program can enhance school improvement efforts. Candidates utilize information found in professional journals to improve library practices.

29. Internet Filtering Paper • The Internet Filtering paper was an assignment that required research on internet filtering for school library media center. This assignment required looking at the pros and cons of internet filtering. After studying these any one could form an opinion on internet filtering. This also helped with learning about how a media program should run and also reminded me of why it is so important to have internet filtering on public school computers. This assignment also gave me insight about what all goes on behind the scenes of protecting our students from things that they should not see. Qwik Start Guide • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 4.1 Educational Leader Candidates select, analyze, and evaluate print, non-print and electronic resources using professional selection tools and evaluation criteria to develop a quality collection designed to meet diverse curricular and personal needs. Candidates organize the library media facility and its collections-print, non-print and electronic-according to standard accepted practice. Candidates support intellectual freedom and privacy users. Candidates plan for efficient use of resources and technology to meet diverse user needs.

31. Qwik Start Guide • The Qwik Start Guide was created to provide a guide to the OPAC guide for a specific county. This assignment allowed for dissection and direct exposure to a specific OPAC. Even though I deal with our systems OPAC daily there were things that I did not know existed and that could be done using the OPAC system. I found it very useful to be able to create our own guide so that in the future we could be familiar with an OPAC guide. Budget • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 4.2 Managing program resources: human, financial, physical Candidates develop and evaluate policies and procedures that support the mission of the school and address specific needs of the library media program, such as collection development and maintenance, challenged materials and acceptable use policies. Candidates apply accepted management principles and practices that relate to personnel, financial and operational issues. Candidates plan adequate space for individuals, small groups, and whole classes.

33. Budget • The budget was created in order to bring exposure to all that goes into the process of preparing the budget. The proposed budget is for 3 school years with considerations for changes in funding and costs. This assignment deals with the financial aspect of being a media specialist. Student Instruction Project • ALA/AASL Standard met through this assignment: 4.3 Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop a library media program plan that aligns resources, services and information literacy standards with the school’s goals and objectives. Candidates use data for decision making.

35. Student Instruction Project • The student instruction project is a plan for instruction that brings together resources to supplement a specific lesson plan. This project allows for the collaboration of the media specialist and the teacher. Instead of just doing a story and a worksheet they have now been taught to use things hands-on and used the SMART Board to help them not only share, but also use technology while learning. 36. In Conclusion… As I end the media program I have grown professionally, emotionally, and mentally. I feel as though what I have learned in the media program will allow me to strive to be who I need to be. I feel as though I can better serve students and teachers both as they strive to become self-motivated, life long learners.
