3. 1. The British control Boston • By June 1775, the British had 6,500 troops in Boston • The Americans had around 10,000 surrounding the city • Some Americans troops occupied Breed’s hill in Charlestown-a position where they could fire on incoming British ships • The Americans also controlled nearby Bunker Hill

4. 2. Battle of Bunker Hill • Commander for the British was General William Howe • Commander for the Americans was Colonel William Prescott • Battle actually takes place at Breed’s Hill, closest to the water

Battle of Bunker Hill • Howe decided to attack straight up Breed’s Hill • The Americans had very little ammunition , so their commander told them not to fire upon the British until they were only 150 feet away! • Famous order from American commander: "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes"

6. 3. Well…who won? • The 1st and 2nd British attack failed trying to overtake the hill • Why do you think? • The 3rd attack succeeded, but only because the Americans ran out of ammunition and had to retreat

7. 4. British win at a high cost • The British won, but at a terrible cost. • What would happen to many British soldiers as they made their way up the hill? Who was at the top? • Yes, more than 1,000 were killed or wounded as the Americans shot down at them. • Americans proved they could fight well trained, professional British soldiers. • Only 400 Americans were killed or wounded.

Problem NOT solved • The battle of Bunker hill did not solve Britain's problems • Boston was still surrounded by George Washington and his American forces • Washington placed the cannons from Fort Ticonderoga (took 3 months to arrive!) on high ground over Boston • The British could no longer defend the city, on March 17th 1776 they withdrew from Boston by sea an never returned! • But the war was far from over! • Britain still had many advantages

9. 6. British war strategy • Stop the rebellion of Massachusetts • Divide and conquer at NY (NY was loyal to the crown) • Maintain the South using the loyalists there • Most powerful navy in the world • Hired mercenaries-solders who serve another county for money

10. 7. American War Strategy • Take Quebec providence and use it as leverage later on • Use guerilla warfare and use scorched earth (burn everything) • Survive and drag the war out for as long as possible..exhaust the enemy!
