Thursday, 2/27/14Goals for today: Look closer at development of teeth, sensory issues, growth rates, proportion & posture. How many do children get? • Tooth activity • Posture & proportion • Sensory Dysfunction- what is it; what are symptoms. The following are signs of auditory defensiveness: - demonstrates distress, hides, or cries in response to loud or unexpected noises (for example, blenders, vacuum cleaners, hair dryer, dogs barking) - protects ears from sounds by covering ears - difficulty doing tasks when the radio or TV is on - hard time with focusing or functioning when there is a lot of noise - cannot work with noise in the background, like a fan or refrigerator running - notices sounds no one else hears, like a clock ticking, airplane flying over head, etc.
Another type of sensory issue is oral defensiveness. The common symptoms of a child with oral defensiveness include: •Picky eater…avoids certain textures, temperatures, or flavors of food •Gags easily or gags with certain food textures or smells •Difficulty sucking, chewing, or swallowing •Chokes easily •Avoids/dislikes tooth brushing or face washing •Dislikes going to the dentist •Avoids/dislikes getting hands or face messy •Inappropriate tasting or mouthing of non-food items
children with tactile defensiveness (hypersensitivity to touch/tactile input) will avoid touching, become fearful of, or bothered by the following: •textured materials/items •"messy" things •vibrating toys, etc. •a hug •a kiss •certain clothing textures •rough or bumpy bed sheets •seams on socks ( click here to find out about seamless socks ) •tags on shirts •light touch •hands or face being dirty •shoes and/or sandals •wind blowing on bare skin •bare feet touching grass or sand
Signs of visual defensiveness can include: - preferring or happy to be in the dark - avoiding or showing discomfort in response to bright lights (asking to turn of the lights often during the day or hiding from sunlight are two examples) - squinting or covering eyes to protect them from bright lights - having a hard time putting together age-appropriate puzzles - frustration with finding objects in a messy room or cluttered drawer - continues to be bothered by bright lights when everyone else has already adapted to the light

Signs for Toilet Training • Usually between ages 2-3 (earlier can cause children to take longer) • Must be physically ready • physical control of bladder and bowel functions • Recognize the signals that elimination is necessary • Able to remove clothes easily • Must be emotionally ready (show interest in wanting to use toilet) • During a calm time in family life
Basics for Toilet training… • Positive attitude from caregiver • Calm encouragement vs. rules and punishment • If ready they will want to succeed • Expect accidents • Be prepared for fears (toilet flush, discomfort, actual waste product) • May prefer child seat on toilet or potty chair • Bowel usually before bladder (awareness of sensation and can see in face or body movements) • Avoid demands • Training pants develop independence • Positive reinforcement • Set aside enough time in schedule
Making Meals Appealing • Color- vary color when choosing foods • Texture-choose different textures • Shape- add interest to the look of food • Temperature- both hot & cold in a meal • Ease of Eating- size of foods & how prepared and cut up Examples?

Clothing Considerations • Self Dressing; (requires fine and gross motor skills) • Practice (undressing is easier) • Patience (need plenty of time) • Clothes easy to put on and take off, without fasteners, buckles, buttons to start with • Take it in steps • Often inside out and backwards • Boosts self-esteem, independence • Plan for growth & comfort (stretch) • Choose appropriate fabric for comfort and safety • Durable & flame retardant sleepwear

Write a 5 minute Haiku….about trust & family care givers: mom, dad, grandparent, etc….A haiku is an unrhymed three-line poem. It is based on a traditional Japanese poetic form. The traditional pattern in English is to write the first and last lines with five syllables each, and the middle line with seven syllables.
