Projects to Try A Vertical Herb Garden 1. Having secured the planter to a wall or fence, fill the base of each pouch with potting compost. 2. Place the plants u2013 here different thymes and camomile u2013 into the pouches and check the top of each rootball will not be too high in its pouch. 3. Backfill each pouch with compost to secure the rootball in place. 4. Water very carefully and gradually, to avoid water and compost spilling over the pouch edges. Herb Oil 1. Pour good-quality olive oil into a clean, sterilized bottle or bottles. 2. Select one or more types of herb and ensure each is fresh and disease-free. 3. Push the herbs into each bottle the more herbs used, the stronger the flavour will be in the oil. 4. Seal, then leave to infuse for two weeks before using. Remove the herbs once the bottle is opened. Harvesting Seed & Fennel Pollen 1. On a dry day, select some good-quality fennel flower or seed heads. 2. Cut each head with plenty of stalk attached and upend it into a paper bag (never use a plastic one, because it would foster humidity and therefore rot). 3. Hang each bag somewhere cool and dry for about two weeks. 4. Then use fennel pollen or seed as needed. Herbal Wreath 1. Wire on small bunches (here, of rosemary) at a time, securing firmly them to the twisted hazel base. 2. Check that the bunches are evenly spaced around the base. 3. Fruits such as chillies can add colour to the wreath. 4. A wreath is a decorative way to dry and store bay leaves in the kitchen.<br>
