What is an Eclipse? Eclipse: When an object temporarily blocks sunlight from reaching another object.
Shadows of Eclipses- • Umbra- Darkest part of a shadow. • Penumbra- lighter portion of a shadow. Video clip
Solar Eclipse- Moon comes between Sun and Earth and casts a shadow on Earth. Can occur only during a new moon animation
Total and Partial Solar Eclipses Moon Moon
Lunar Eclipse- Earth comes between the Sun and the moon. Can occurs only during a full moon.
Lunar eclipses occur because of the moon’s tilted orbit and only occur a couple times in a year Total Lunar Eclipse
Lunar Eclipses (nasa.gov) Penumbral Lunar Eclipse of 2013 May 25….11:10PM
What is a tide? Bay of Fundy clip • Rise and fall of the sea level along the coastline. Sea level rise= High tide Drop in sea level= Low tide
Caused by gravitational pull of Sun and Moon on the Earth. • Daily there are 2 high tides and 2 lows. (6 hours for each)
Affect of Gravity on tides- • As the moon orbits Earth, the water closest to the moon gets “pulled” • Bulges= high tides Non-bulges= low tides
Spring Tides-high tides are higher and low tides are lower. • During New moon and Full moon phases. • Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line. • Strongest gravitational pull.
Neap Tides-little difference between high and low tide sea levels. • During 1st and 3rd quarter. • Moon, Earth, and Sun are in a Ninety (90 degree angle) • Not as strong
