Requirements and Availability • Youth Participants must be 14 years of age by July 24, 2016 OR have completed the 8th grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to participation • Spaces Available in 2 Crews • Crew = 7-12 participants • Must have a majority of youth • Limited to a maximum of four (4) adults 21+ years of age • Height/Weight Requirements – Youth & Adults • http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Philmont/Camping/WhoCanCome/HealthMedicalRequirements.aspx
Reservations / Payment • Philmont Only (no travel/other costs): • January 16, 2015 - $100.66 • September 23, 2015 - $385.66 • February 10, 2016 - $385.66 • FEES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THESE DATES • Fees are non-refundable • Total Cost w/o Travel: $871.98 per person • Payment via SignUpGenius • Phillips Waite Scholarships may be available • Est. $100-$200 per individual • Details on eligibility forthcoming from Philmont
Fundraising • Annual Hot Dog Sale at Fairfax Festival • Additional Fundraisers may be scheduled by the Troop Committee • If you’re going, plan on participating!
Physical Activity and Preparation • Philmont is no stroll through the park! • Heavy packs, high altitudes, and a lot ofmileage up & down • Be Prepared • Physical Exam due December 2015 • Forms will be provided from Philmont in advance • Do Regular Aerobic Exercise • 30 – 60 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week • Wilderness First Aid Course
Physical Activity, cont. • Hiking and Backpacking Merit Badges • Backpacking is the BEST way to prepare for Philmont • Merit Badge Requirements: • Take five hikes, each on a different day, and each of 10 continuous miles (Hiking) • Take a hike of 20 continuous miles in one day (Hiking) • Participate in at least 3 backpacking treks of at least 3 days each and at least 15 miles each, and using at least two different campsites on each trek (Backpacking) • Even if you have the Merit Badges, all Philmont-bound Scouts will need to participate in our hiking program to be eligible to attend
Voyage Planning • Flying to/from Denver, Colorado • Rental cars to/from Philmont • Costs TBD

Philmont Treks, cont. • Unfortunately, there are more things to see & do than one can fit into a single itinerary so selection is important. Things to consider: • What you’d like to see & do • How far you want or are able to hike each day. e.g. • 14-15 year old Scouts – 5 to 8 miles per day • 15-16 year old Scouts – 6 to 9 miles per day • 16-17 year old Scouts – 8 to 11 miles per day • Time you’d like to spend at camp vs. on the trail • Two Crews = Two Choices
