Chapter 1: Ventilation and Warming • Rule #1: To keep the air inside as clean as the air outside, without chilling those under your care. • - Use proper bed clothes and hot bottles to keep a patient warm in bed and ventilate them at the same time. • - Purity of air is essential, temperature must be controlled so it won’t chill or overheat a patient.
A careful nurse will keep constant watch over her sick, especially the weak, collapsed cases, to guard against the effects of loss of vital heat. • Night air is the best and purest air, especially for airing patients rooms. • Never air out damp towels or linens in a patients room.
Abolish chamber utensils (bed pans) without lids. • Chamber utensils (bed pans) should be taken from patients room and emptied in the proper place. • Abolish slop pails • Do not depend on fumigations or disinfectants for purifying the air. The offensive thing should be removed, not it’s smell.
Chapter 9: Bed and Bedding • Air dirty sheets, as well as clean sheets. • Change sheets often, at least once a week. • Beds should not be too wide or too tall to ensure easy access to a patient. • A patients bed should be in the lightest spot of the room so they can see out the window.
Chapter 10: Cleanliness of Rooms and Walls • Keep carpets and furniture clean • Wipe furniture and ledges with a damp rag to remove dust, do not use a duster. • Carpet should be taken up often, 2-3 times a year, or vacuumed frequently. • Keep floors clean. • Walls should be white, non-absorbent cement, not covered with wallpaper.
Prevent • Dirty air coming from without – pollution • Dirty air coming from within – dust • Dirty air coming from the carpet • Outer air can only be kept clean by sanitary improvements. • Inside air kept clean by ridding walls, carpets, furniture and ledges of organic matter and dust.
“Without cleanliness, you cannot have all the effect of ventilation; without ventilation, you can have no thorough cleanliness.”
