  1. Archetypes r⋅che⋅type [ahr-ki-tahyp]–noun 1. the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form The standard for a hero!

  2. Tragic Hero – an archetypal character Elements of a Tragic Hero: • BORN INTO NOBILITY. The character's position in the community shows a sense of nobility, authority, influence, or power • RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS/HER OWN FATE. The hero is not perfect and may make this error as a result of hubris, or "overweening pride or insolence that results in the misfortune of the protagonist of a tragedy…[It] leads the protagonist to break a moral law, attempt vainly to transcend normal limitations, or ignore a dive warning with calamitous results."

  3. Tragic Hero – an archetypal character Elements of a Tragic Hero: 3. HAS A TRAGIC FLAW (fault): has an "error, frailty, mistaken judgment, or misstep through which the fortunes of the hero of a tragedy are reversed.” This is also called hamartia, from the Greek. 4. FALLS FROM A POSITION OF HONOR OR HIGH ESTEEM: punishment is harsh and arouses pity and empathy in the audience (catharsis) 5. REALIZES HIS/HER MISTAKE AND EVENTUALLY FACES AND ACCEPTS HIS/HER DOWNFALL: character gains self-knowledge; he or she realizes an important new insight as a result of the experience and punishment and achieves some reconciliation with the universe.
