What Is It? Sickle Cell Anemia is……. A Genetic disease body produces abnormally shaped red blood cells. Red blood cells shaped like crescent/sickle Don’t last as long as red blood cells (lead to anemia ) Can get stuck in blood vessel blocking blood flow Causing pain and organ damage
How do You Get It?? • born with two sickle genes (one from each parent). • only one sickle gene = trait is not expressed because it is recessive. • About 1 in every 12 African American have sickle cell trait(testing can show if trait is present) • Gene responsible for sickle cell anemia is Beta hemoglobin (HBB) / hemoglobin S
Common Symptoms • Fatigue, Fever, Paleness, Increased Heart Rate, Frequent urination, Excessive thirst, Poor Eye Sight, Skin ulcers, Yellowing of both eyes and skin, Delayed growth, Strokes, Breathlessness, Painful and prolonged erections • Pain • Abdominal • Bone
How To Treat/Prevent Sickle Cell Anemia… • Taking supplements of Folic Acid • Antibiotics and Vaccines are given to prevent infection • Blood Transfusion • Bone Marrow or Stem Cell transplants • Oxygen loss
