Bold Initiatives by NDA Government • Govt after coming to power (1998),launched an unprecedented and very courageous programme called National Highways Development Project (NHDP) for removing capacity constraints and improving all weather connectivity • NHDP a dream project of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Behari Vajpeyee Never before in the history of India has such a massive road construction work been taken up by any Govt.,except Sher Shah Suri, who visualized the Grand Trunk Road • Levy of Re 1 each as cess on sale of every liter of diesel and petrolfor raising financial resources for NHDP Central Road fund Per annum approx to NHDP : Rs 2,000 Crores Rural Roads : Rs. 2,500 Crores State Roads : Rs. 1,000 Crores ROB & Safety : Rs. 300 Crores
Major Milestones • Hon’ble Prime Minister announces construction of North-South & East - West Corridors : Oct. 24, 1998 • Task force headed by Dy. Chairman, Planning Commission constituted : Oct. 30, 1998 • Task force decides on NHDP GQ : 5952* km + NSEW : 7300 km : Dec. 9, 1998 • Foundation stone laid by Prime Minister : Jan. 2, 1999 ( at Devanhalli, Karnataka ) • Govt., approves Phase I (Rs.30,300crs) : Dec.12, 2000 • Cess of Rs 1 per ltr on petrol levied in Union Budget for FY : 1998-1999 • Cess of Rs 1 per ltr on diesel levied in Union Budget for FY : 1999-2000 • GQ Contracts awarded except - Allahabad bypass : 84 km - Himatnagar – Chiloda (Court Case) : 52 km *now after alignment 5846 km
