FGM report11th Cross calibration workshopElizabeth Lucek, Patrick Brown, Chris Carr, Tim Oddy, André Balogh Imperial College London April 2010
Management changes • Archiving tasks currently divided among other team members CAA status of data submission • Primary FGM data delivered to CAA: Feb 2001 – Dec 2008 • Magnetic field data: Full resolution, 5 vectors/second, spin averaged • Supporting files: GAPF (data gaps in processed data); VALF (data gaps introduced at validation stage – small number, generally only affects a few vectors at a time) • Supporting FGM files delivered to CAA: Feb 2001 – Dec 2006 • CAVF: caveat files provided only when data quality is affected by external effects • CALA: calibration accuracy files • Outlook • Routine data delivery has recommenced • Expect to deliver data from Jan – Oct 2009 by late summer 2010
FGM CAA documentation • Sources of documentation for FGM and FGM data • Interface Control Document (ICD) • New ICD delivered to the CAA (CAA_FGM_ICD_0002_V0_4) • FGM User Guide • V 1.0 delivered to the CAA in January 2009 • Cross-Calibration report • V 1.0 delivered to the CAA in January 2009 • Updates to be made in response to Peer Review recommendations before CAA Operations review • Description of calibration procedure in Gloag et al, Astrophysics and Space Science Proceedings, 2009
PSDS/UP Range 6 and Range 7 updates • FGM enters R6 and R7 in auroral acceleration zone and through perigee • First R6 data Sept/Oct 2008 • First R7 data Nov 2009 • Updates completed to FGM DP software and implementation of R6 and R7 processing in PSDS/UP • R6 calibration • Initial calibration parameters were derived using data from January 2009 • Parameters in daily calibration files will be updated from Feb 2009 • R7 calibration • Default R7 parameters released • NB: R7 data calibrated using default parameters will show spin tone • Additional set of calibration files required • Many thanks to Karl-Heinz Glassmeier, Edita Georgescu and Karl-Heinz Fornacon for updating FGM DP software and daily calibration files – Please acknowledge them if you publish R6 or R7 data
Action Items I • CC10-AI-5: Source of high-frequency noise in an event of 2002-Jul4, 12:50-12:52 UT (C1) (see STAFF presentation p9) • The FGM data are normal – the interval has very low natural signal, allowing instrumental noise level to be seen • CLOSED • CC8-AI-12: Poorly determined spin axis offset • Effect: up to 1 nT discrepancy in B in solar wind • Data affected: Mar 2002; First half Jan 2003; First half Feb 2003 • Thought to arise from either: • Error in application of solar wind calibration (Jan, Feb 2003) • Insufficient solar wind data to yield good spin axis offsets (Mar 2002) • V02 data from Jan and Feb 2003 prepared • CAVF files for March 2002 prepared • Data will be checked and delivered when time allows • OPEN
Action Items II • CC8-AI-13/FGM09-AI-5: Delivery of data from Nov 2000 – Jan 2001 • Data from early part of commissioning period could be calibrated using cut-down pipeline • Plan to deliver data from Jan 2001 using calibration files from Feb 2001 • OPEN • FGM09-AI-3: Verification that CAA has complete data set • CAA has compiled a list of missing files • Missing data that did not need reprocessing have been transferred successfully • A handful of data files do need to be reprocessed – in progress • OPEN
Other issues • Outstanding CAVF and CALA files for Jan 2007 – Dec 2008 • Data prepared when time allows • OPEN – HIGH PRIORITY • Routine generation of CAVF files • Most of the software is written • Redelivery of all CAVF files would be straightforward once procedure finished • OPEN – LOW PRIORITY • Preparation of data for summer 2001 incorporating inter-spacecraft calibration • Significant improvement not found to date • ON HOLD • Calibration refinement files – for use in following changes in calibration parameters in a single orbit • Software written and tested, but not ready for routine use • ON HOLD
