Details • c550-530BC • Black figures • Neck amphora – offset neck and horizontal shoulder
Figures • On the body – only three figures in one block rather than dividing it up into friezes • Dionysus on the left holds a kantharos jug and raises his hand to greet the maenads (female followers of Dionysus) • Maenads hold wild animals and ivy branches with arms around eachother • Skin of maenads not painted but outlines and left as the natural colour of the clay • One wears a panther skin
Figures • Frontal almond eyes and profile bodies in all figures • Repetition in the figures – maenads feet • Symmetry in the arms round each other • Still abnormally long fingers
Patterns • Ray band at the bottom • Lotus bud chains above them • Floral frieze on the neck • Incised lines make the patterns on the drapery and hair
Contrasts • Light and dark skin • Angular and rounded patterns at the bottom and on the neck • Plain and patterned drapery
Woody says • “a decorative delight” • “clever use of repeated patterns” • “the total effect is bright and cheerful”
