Valence Electron Game • Directions: • Compete against your table partner • Goal: Be the first to circle the correct number of valence electrons for a given atom. • On the following slides are elements. When we click on the slide, circle the number on your scorecard that corresponds to the number of valence electrons in the element.

Chemical Bond = the attraction that holds atoms together • Why do atoms bond? • Atoms bond in order to become stable (fill their outer shell)
Octet Rule • All atoms want to become super stable, awesome, Noble gasses! • In other words, all atoms want 8 valence electrons.
Types of Chemical Bonds • Ionic bond = electrons are TRANSFERRED between atoms • Occurs between metal and nonmetal
Types of Chemical Bonds • 2) Covalent bond = electrons are SHARED between atoms • Occurs between nonmetal and nonmetal

Ionic Bonds • The Sodium atom donates its one valence electron to Chlorine. : Na · · Cl : :
Ionic Bonds • Now, both atoms have a full outer electron cloud. • Na is now positively charged = cation (+1 because it now has 1 more PROTON than electrons) • Cl is now negatively charged = anion (-1 because it now has 1 more ELECTRON than protons) • The 2 atoms are held together by the electrostatic attractions (think of magnets!) : Na+1 · Cl-1 : · :
