  2. Foreshadowing • The author’s use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story.

  3. Flashback • A scene within a story that interrupts the sequence of events.

  4. Protagonist • The main character in a story is called the protagonist. She or he is always involved in the main conflict and its resolution.

  5. Antagonist • The person opposing the protagonist is called the antagonist.

  6. Types of Conflict • .

  7. External Conflict • There are three types of external conflict:character vs. character; character vs. society; andcharacter vs. nature.

  8. Character vs. Character • The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with others, especially the antagonist.

  9. Character vs. Society • The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with society as a whole.

  10. Character vs. Nature • The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with the elements of nature.

  11. Internal Conflict • The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with her or his conscience.
