Plot Triangle • Exposition—introduces setting, characters, and situation • Rising Action—conflict builds • Climax—highest point of conflict; turning point of a story • Falling Action—conflict is resolved • Resolution—conclusion to a story
Point ofview—perspective from which the story is told • Third person—narrator is outside of the story (speaks with he/she/they) • First person—narrator is a character in the story (speaks with I/we/us) Theme—message or insight about life or human nature
Foreshadowing—hinting about an event that will occur later in the story Suspense—sense of uncertainty about the outcome of events in a story Symbol—a person, place, or thing that represents something beyond itself Irony—contrast between what is expected and what really happens
Metaphor—a direct comparison between two unlike things Simile—a comparison using like or as Personification—giving an inanimate object human characteristics
