  1. Iditarod By: Mrs. C. Heckstall, ESL Teacher Hall-Woodward Elementary School 2012-2013 School Year

  2. Look at this picture. What do you see?

  3. This is Alaska. • Alaska is the largest state in the United States! • Canada borders the state to the southeast, the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Bering Strait to the northwest, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest.

  4. Alaska is famous for… • Gold • Oil • Lumber • Salmon • Crab • Beautiful, rugged nature • Midnight Sun! • The Northern Lights • The Iditarod

  5. The Iditarod is the most popular annual dog-sled race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. • The trail is 1,049 miles long, and can take anywhere from 8 to 15 days to complete! Conditions can sometimes be very dangerous. Blizzards, wrong turns, and hurt dogs can slow down the progress of the musher, or the driver of the sled.

  6. Because the Iditarod is a very long trail, there are several places where mushers and their dogs stop and rest, called checkpoints. The checkpoints are sort of the activity centers for the race. All of the veterinarians, officials, and food for mushers and dogs are at the checkpoints. From: http://www.alaskafares.com/wintertours/faq.html The race trail has a total of 26 checkpoints between the Wasilla starting line and Nome. The checkpoints vary from people's homes along rivers to old cabins in the woods to villages and ghost towns. A few checkpoints are just remote place where planes could land to drop off officials and food and set up tents.

  7. Mushers, or drivers of the sled, take very good care of their dogs.

  8. Akiak: A Tale of the Iditarod • Our story, Akiak: A Tale of the Iditarod, is a story about a sled dog named Akiak who wants to win the Iditarod Race. When things don’t go well, Akiak does not give up. • Think about a time when you had to do something difficult. Did you give up, or did you keep going? What did you do? • Turn and talk to a partner!

  9. Vocabulary from the story • Vow: to promise • Blizzard: a heavy snowstorm with strong winds • Scent: smell

  10. Vocabulary from the story • Rugged: rough and uneven • Snap: to move quickly and sharply • Shift: to change position • Burrow: to dig • Snowdrift: snow piled up by the wind

  11. Vocabulary from the story • Squint: to look with the eyes partially closed • Rumble: a heavy, deep, rumbling sound
