Functions of the Muscular System • some of the main functions of the muscular system: • Mobility • Strength • Heat production • Shock absorption • Shaping the body • Maintaining posture • Respiration
Functions of the Muscular System continued • In addition it plays a role digestive process by peristalsis to move the food through • It is also essential for pumping blood and plays a role in smooth muscles of the blood vessels to raise blood pressure during the stress response • Muscles help the blood to have mobility through the environment, and motility inside the body for its process
Types of Muscle Tissue • Smooth-located in walls of hollow organs & in skin, appears smooth. • Cardiac- forms heart, appears striated.(streaked). • Skeletal-attached to skeletal system; appears streaked.
Muscle Fatigue • Occurs from depletion of glycogen or neurotransmitters in the muscle tissue which prevents muscle from performing repetitive motion, actions or any voluntary movement. • A decline in the maximal force or power capacity of muscle.
Effects of exercise • Exercise will make up the muscle more efficient • Different types of exercise, have different effects on the muscles • High intensity low duration exercise will produce strength, size, and power. While, low intensity will produce endurance type benifet
Interaction of flexors and extensors • Flexors-shorten angle between two bones • Extensors-increases angle between two bones • Tendons-part of the muscle that attaches to the bone • Ligament-attaches a bone to another bone
Muscle Disorders • “Atony” In this disorder muscles lose their elasticity • Muscles loose a lot of strength • Disorders can be fatal • Cause, atonic seizures, uterine atony and Gastrointestinal atony which is cauesd by lapse in musle tone
Connective tissues • There are many kinds of connective tissues in the body • Most types of connective tissue contain strands of the protein collagen that add strength to connective tissue • Example: • The inner layer of skin • Tendons • Ligaments • Cartilage • Bone • Fat
Tendons • A tendon is a tough connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone or to another body part. • Connects bone and muscle tissue.
Roles of a Diaphragm • A muscle located under the ribs. • Key muscle that allows us to breathe. • Diaphragm contracts, causes increase in pressure in pleural cavity, which causes us to exhale. Then the diaphragm relaxes, air drawn into our lungs due to a decrease in pressure.
